We all know that the holidays bring a lot of fun with them, often in the form of beverages!
The most common question I’m asked in my online and free community is where does alcohol fit into a conscious lifestyle? So what is the alternative to rum and eggnog this holiday season? Why not try some Kombucha!
What is Kombucha?
Kombucha, [kawm-boo-chah], is a fermented tea that has been consumed for thousands of years in Asia, yet is relatively new to Western society. Sometimes it is referred to as a “healing elixir” because it can boost your health on so many levels. From detoxification to reducing joint pain, increasing immunity, aiding digestion and yes…even weight loss!
This drink is made by adding either black or green tea, yeast, and sugar and allowing it to undergo a fermentation process which takes about a week. This is super easy. Just use my simple recipe listed below.
What Makes It So Healthy?
During the fermentation process, acetic acid is produced. This acid along with the antioxidants from the tea are a large part of why Kombucha has a detoxifying effect on the body and boosts immunity. Plus, it has a smell and taste that is similar to a cider, making it the perfect alternative to replace booze on your favorite drink.
Should I Make My Own?
Absolutely! Brewing your own is fun.
Also, the tasty varieties in the store contain more sugar than the home-brewed varieties. Last but not least, this drink costs literally pennies to prepare at home and can be quite costly to purchase in the store.
Ferment, Don’t Lament This Holiday Season!
For the past few years, fermented foods have been getting a lot of attention. These foods contain high levels of probiotics (think friendly bacteria) that are responsible for improving gut health, immunity, increasing energy and promoting glowing skin.

Healthier Sugar-Free Cocktails Recipe
Bacteria Buzz Cocktail (alcohol free)
Delicious alternatives for festive beverages this holiday season!
- 8 ounces plain kombucha
- 2 ounces freshly squeeze lemon juice
- 1 tsp freshly grated ginger
- 1 tsp Monk Fruit or 8 drops of Stevia
- 1 lemon slice
- Ice cubes
- Pour ingredients into cocktail shaker filled halfway with ice.
- Pour using a strainer, in a long glass filled with ice cubes
- Garnish with the orange slice
Ginger Zinger Cocktail
You can use dark rum OR try adding more kombucha to boost your immunity!
- 2 Oz of plain kombucha
- 1 Oz of dark rum (optional replace with more kombucha)
- 1 oz of lemon juice
- 1 tsp of sliced ginger
- Crushed ice
- Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake. Enjoy!
Let your kombucha sparkle in this tasty but healthy holiday drink!
- 2 oz of fruity flavoured Kombucha
- 1 oz of vodka (optional replace with more kombucha)
- 1 oz of lime juice
- 2 mint leaves
- crushed ice
- Place all ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake
- Poor into a martini glass
