I want you to know—it’s totally normal.⁠ ⁠ Because if you’re like the hundreds of women I’ve worked with over the years, you didn’t grow up learning how to practice self-compassion. For most of your adult life, you’ve been in “push through” mode just to survive.⁠ ⁠ Since self-compassion is one of the core principles of the Going Beyond The Food Method, I’ve become an expert at helping women navigate this very challenge.⁠ ⁠ Here’s the thing—resisting self-compassion is actually healthy. It’s your nervous system trying to protect you from what feels unsafe.⁠ ⁠ When something unfamiliar, like self-compassion, has been labelled as “weak” or “unproductive” for most of your life, it’s no wonder it feels awkward, uncomfortable, or like it’s just not for you… at first.⁠ ⁠ Self-compassion, like any new habit, is going to feel weird at first.⁠ ⁠ The key is to make it feel safe for your nervous system. ⁠ ⁠ Here’s the simple script I shared with my clients to help take the “sulky” feeling out of self-compassion:⁠ **“It makes total sense that self-compassion feels uncomfortable right now because, for most of my life, I’ve survived by ‘pushing through.’⁠ ⁠ So, yeah, it’s normal that I feel awkward.⁠ ⁠ But I’m ready to change this survival behavior because it no longer serves my well-being. What does this mean for women…The better we fe What does this mean for women…The better we feel about our bodies the more likely we are to take care of them by eating well and being active, allowing us to create a positive cycle.  Likewise, dissatisfaction with our bodies can discourage us from taking part in certain activities, eating properly to fuel our bodies, and can eventually lead to weight gain.That’s the biggest mistake I—along with many of my clients—were making: believing that shame was the key to better health. 🙄Years of being socialized by diet culture led us to think that if we could guilt and shame ourselves enough, we’d magically adopt those “better” health behaviors.Spoiler alert: it doesn’t work!Behavioral science has been telling us all along that negative motivation may give you a quick fix, but it leads to negative health outcomes.That 2013 study showed that dissatisfaction with our bodies can hold us back from enjoying activities, properly fueling ourselves, and can even lead to weight gain.The bottom line?
