She knew intuitive eating inside out. But the behaviors weren’t following.And she couldn’t figure out why. Here’s what I told her:“Diet culture didn’t just give you food rules. It rewired your brain. It taught you to ignore your hunger, override your fullness, shut down every signal your body sends — because if you actually listened to your body, you’d never be able to diet.And it goes deeper than food. “Why can’t I just eat like a normal person?” — rea “Why can’t I just eat like a normal person?” — read this.People who don’t struggle with eating will often say:“I just eat.”They’ve never been taught to make eating mean more than what it is.They didn’t learn to tie food to body size.
Or worth.
Or morality.
Or their value in the world.That social conditioning is what must be unlearned to re-establish normal eating.Diet culture works at the level of thoughts and beliefs.
So healing must happen there too.You don’t shift obsessive or compulsive eating through nutrition education.
Or worse a meal plan.
