299-Wishful Thinking Trap of Diet Culture

299-Wishful Thinking Trap of Diet Culture

Wishful Thinking

Wishful Thinking is the formation of beliefs based on what might be pleasing to imagine rather than on reality, evidence, FACTS. It’s usually grown from fear. We don’t resort to Wishful Thinking because it works. We resort to Wishful Thinking because it allows us to avoid confronting our fear.

Wishing Thinking is when you want something to be true even when it’s not true, like the fantasy of the thin ideal. Think of all the years we pursue dieting… The endless “on and off” diet cycle always lands right back in the same place.

Wishful thinking Trap

Wishful Thinking creates a trap. This is when we maintain the belief that the next diet will work even the last 5 didn’t (if you’re like more like a dozen!)

Instead of being objective in our Thinking, we fantasize about how much our life will be better once we start this next diet.

We Indulge in fantasy thinking.

We keep the “thin” clothes in our closet and perhaps even hang the little red dress as a “motivator.” We avoid coming face to face with our small day-to-day problems, and instead, we bury them in avoidance. We get lost in the magical Thinking that once we lose weight… all of these little annoyances will go away.

It’s easier to think about fantasies than to think about reality

The reality is that you were thin before, yet here you are today with the same problems, feeling the same anxious feelings… and oh, the last 5 diets didn’t work either!

And you’re about to start all over again… Still placing a hold on living your life, chasing your dreams.

And all you have for evidence that this time will be different is the “dream” that diet culture is selling you…

Wishful Thinking is the trap that prevents you from seeing the reality that food restriction doesn’t work, and all bodies are good bodies.

The solution is objective Thinking.

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:

  • How Wishful Thinking presents itself in our lives
  • The companion to wishful Thinking; Magical Thinking
  • The illusion of diet culture
  • The power of objective Thinking

298-Having Your Own Back

Having Your Own Back

Having your own back is a skill we are born with.

Think of a toddler learning to walk; That baby will get back up with every fall down. You’ll not see a toddler sitting on the floor, wondering if they should get up and learn to walk.

Just like self-love, having our own back is often unlearned in favor of self-criticism.

But we can relearn to have our own back!

Having our own back

Learning to have your own back is the process of developing an internal culture of unconditional self-compassion

It is being your own best friend and treating yourself in a respectful and supportive way.

Having your own back means that no matter what, you will fight for your own potential, not limitations as imposed by diet culture or patriarchy.

Learning to have your own back is training your brain to make the choice to have your own back.

  • It’s about choosing to see the possibilities in your own damn self
  • It’s about choosing to believe in yourself
  • Understanding that failure is an opportunity to learn – failure capacity

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:

  • What it means to have your own back
  • Where did we learn NOT to have our own back
  • What happens when you learn to have your own back
  • How to have your own back

297-Marie Kondoing your thoughts-IG Story

I want you to think of the process of undieting your brain of all the diet culture thoughts and beliefs, like Marie kondioing your mind.

Undiet Your Life is the act of decluttering your mind from all the thoughts that are no longer serving you, that no longer spark joy, happiness and ease for you.

Marie Kondoing your thoughts

You’ve picked thoughts all along your life, and up until now, you have kept them. Now, you have a mind filled with thoughts that create anxiety, perfectionism, black-and-white thinking, and fear.

Thoughts are like the clutter Marie Kondo is coaching people to purge… You can purge your old thoughts too.

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:

  • Why Marie Kondo is such a brilliant analogy for undieting your brain
  • Learning to respect your old thoughts
  • How to declutter your mind
  • Developing a critical lens for intentional thinking

296-Q&A: Can You Accept Your Body and Still Want to Change It?

Can You Accept Your Body and Still Want to Change It?

“Can I accept my body and still want to change it?”

That question is on the mind of many women as they begin their journey undieting their life.

On today’s podcast, I will help find the answer to this question—the best answer for you, your body and your life.

My role as a coach is not to tell you what is right or wrong with you but to help you gain the confidence and autonomy to make a decision for yourself.

Can you accept your body and still want to change it?

The answer can be yes or no… You’ll make this decision.

I’ll coach on 3 questions to ask yourself in order to find your answer. It will take time and reflection, but you’ll find the answer the best suits you.

You have the power to make choices about your body. My advice is to make sure you like and respect the reasons why that fueled your choice. That the reason you decide to change your body or not serves YOU, not diet culture.

For that, the beliefs and thoughts that lead you to a choice should come from a place of love for yourself and your body instead of fear.

The key to happiness, confidence and a peaceful life is that first we are in a position to be autonomous and have agency over our own life.

In this episode #296 of the Going Beyond The Food Show, we will discuss:

  • How my relationship with my family has changed
  • What does body acceptance truly mean
  • Why is there not 1 answer for everyone to the questions
  • 3 questions to ask yourself to find the answer to the question to find the best answer for you

Undieting Your Life

Undieting your life – The Definition

The question I was asked: “What does it mean to undiet your life?”

I was stomped with this question because I thought our marketing message was clear but clearly, it wasn’t… so let me clarify what it means to undiet your life.

Undieting your life doesn’t mean stopping dieting. Although stopping dieting is the first step.

Undieting your life is about restoring your autonomy to feed yourself.

It is about claiming back your power over your own body.

Moreover, it is dismantling DC from your mind and choosing values and beliefs that will lead you to think thoughts that will actually create the life you want and that feel good and does good!

Why am I so passionate about Undieting our life?

Simply because I want women to have the upper hand on diet culture.

I want all of us collectively to be able to detect conditioning from any oppressive system from a mile away and knows exactly on to remain in our power.

It is my desire for us collectively to change the future for the next generation of women so that THEY don’t have to unlearn.

I want us to model acceptance so that they learned from watching us being acceptant of who we are.

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:

  • Why did I add “ not just your food” to the title
  • What does it mean to undiet your life
  • Where to start to undiet your life

294-Body Compliance

294-Body Compliance

Body Compliance

Thru their body women are asked to comply with society’s prescribed norms. Body compliance defines, controls and constrains women.

As women, we learn to perform via our bodies. We demonstrated our ability to be self-disciplined, self-controlled and to comply with social norms via body constraint.

As a result, we learn not to disturb and take space through our bodies. That it is its size or its sign of aging.

Body compliance and beyond

At first, it’s compliance with our body, but it spreads quickly to many other aspects of our life:

  • Need to perform at work
  • People-pleasing our way through a relationship
  • Being productive at all times…

Compliance becomes a way of life for many women.

We aim to comply not to stand out and feel the judgement of others. Compliance becomes a safety net that spreads through our life.

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:

  • The history of body compliance for women
  • Link between compliance and safety
  • The Intersection between grind culture and diet culture
  • How to liberate ourselves from the desire to comply

293-Rebellious Eating

293-Rebellious Eating

Rebellious Eating

Rebellious Eating is when we use food and/or eating in order to resist authority.

In fact, it’s an action to affirm one’s power of her food, body or existence.

It is often called overeating, binging, compulsive eating, nighttime eating or even out-of-control eating.

This behavior is not about the food… it’s about resisting authority over us.

When we eat out of control, we eat away from the control of something or someone else.

Rebellious Eating

This behavior is about fighting for our autonomy and agency. Moreover, when we eat rebelliously, we’re actually restoring our autonomy and protecting our boundaries.

As humans, we’re designed to be autonomous individuals who determine for ourselves when we’re hungry, what we want to eat, and when we’ve had enough. In fact, a part of us will fight for that autonomy until we stop imposing ourselves restrictions.

When you eat rebelliously, you’re actually restoring your autonomy and protecting your boundaries. That is to say, you’re reclaiming your power over food restriction, and ultimately, diet culture.

This is a good thing! It is a healing process. We were never meant to eat according to someone else’s rules.

It allows us to restore our autonomy from food restriction, diets, eating plans, “ways of eating,”… etc.

Certainly, this behavior allows us to reclaim our power.

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:

  • What is rebellious eating
  • How does it show up in different stages of undieting your life
  • What are you rebelling against?
  • The solution to rebellious eating is counterintuitive

Overeating, Binging and Diet Culture

Overeating, Binging & Diet Culture

Most often, when women start their journey beyond dieting, it’s because they want to overcome compulsive eating behaviors like binging or what they self-describe as “overeating.”

They have learned that restriction is causing these compulsive eating behaviors, so they quit dieting… but is it the solution? Is it the only action that needs to be taken in order to end compulsion around food?

That’s what we discussed on today’s podcast. If perhaps you are at this point where even though you have lifted the restriction and still struggling with “overeating,” binging & diet culture this is a must-listen!

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:

  • The link between restriction and compulsive eating behavior
  • What most people miss when it comes to compulsive eating behavior
  • Why making peace with food is not the ultimate solution for binging, overeating or any compulsive behaviors.
  • The belief that is fundamentally holding your back from eating “normally.”

Her Story: Being at Peace with Food Was Not About the Food with Kim

Kim was a listener of the podcast for more than 6 months, and then one day, she listened to me talking about taking action instead of just listening to the podcast.

That’s when she joined us inside Undiet Your Life Course.

She’ll share with you that when she joined Undiet Your Life, she thought, “Let me try this intuitive eating way of eating… it sounds a lot healthier than my last diet.”

288-Believing in Yourself More Than Diet Culture

288-Believing in Yourself More Than Diet Culture

Believing in Yourself

Do you believe in diet culture more than you believe in yourself?

For example, do you believe that your own level of self-confidence is an outcome of the size of your body? Or your beauty? Or the amount of wrinkles you own?

Or maybe you appreciate that for others, it’s possible to be confident at any size, and you admire the women who do but that for you it’s impossible.

Do you believe that for you, it’s impossible to have a peaceful relationship with sugar? Do you secretly believe that something is wrong with your body and that sugar has this unbreakable grip on you that makes it impossible to control?

Do you believe that your habits around exercise and movement are the outcome of your own lack of self-discipline? That if you weren’t so lazy, you’d go for a walk more often?

And I’ll extend this to circumstances outside of food and body… because diet culture beliefs affect your life beyond food.

Maybe you believe that your career is stalled because of your inability to be perfect enough or produce enough work to meet your boss’s standards?

Perhaps you stop yourself from applying for your dream job because your know you are not qualified enough? That other people have so much more to offer than you.

These are all diet culture beliefs.

Believing in yourself more than diet culture

Diet culture beliefs do not support your amazingness, your goodness, and your brilliance.

Diet Culture beliefs have been manufactured in order to create self-doubt in women, feeling of victimhood, distrust with self and disempowerment.

In order to believe in yourself and the possibilities that can be present for you in your life, you need to have beliefs that support this amazingness, goodness that is in you now. That’s what we are going to explore in this episode of our podcast.

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:

  • The diet culture beliefs that stop you from believing in yourself
  • The process of deepening your self-beliefs
  • Believing it’s possible for you to change
  • 10 non-diet culture beliefs that can transform your life
