Why Adding Fat To Your Shake Is Important
In today’s modern society, our bodies are bombarded with sugar. Sugar can be really challenging to avoid when you aren’t preparing your own foods. The Standard American Diet (SAD) causes the body to burn sugar as fuel. But the body requires SO much less than what we take in that it stores it as fat, or it floats around in our bloodstream and can lead to insulin resistance or diabetes. These are huge health issues in our society.
But they don’t have to be, because the body is also able to burn fat as fuel! Hallelujah! All we need to do is flip the switch from sugar burning to fat burning. It’s actually very simple to do. Switching requires that we consume more excellent quality fats and decrease the amount of sugar we take in. Making this high fat smoothie recipe a part of your breakfast routine is starting to make more sense now, isn’t it?
How Do You Choose Which Fats To Eat?
Ok, so what qualifies as a good quality fat Stephanie? Well, I’m glad you asked.
You’ve heard me and a million others talk about the dangers of trans fats. These fats do harm to the body and should be avoided at all costs. Omega 3 fatty acids are essential to the body and decrease inflammation. You find these in fish, such as salmon, and should be included frequently in your diet.
But let me introduce you to a type of fat you may not have heard of before. Meet MCT oil or medium-chain triglyceride oil. Medium-chain triglycerides are a type of saturated fatty acid. When most people hear “saturated fat” they think of all of the bad press fat has received. But these MCTs actually have tons of health benefits including boosting energy, weight management, and improved cognitive function.
MCT Oil vs. Brain Octane
Coconut oil is a great source of medium-chain triglycerides, but there are other options as well. Coconut oil only contains approximately 65% MCTs. Thankfully there are a few wonderful products out there that are more concentrated, like Brain Octane oil. Products like these offer more bang for your buck when adding them to things like the fatty shake or even your coffee!
Brain Octane is one of those products. Still a medium-chain triglyceride oil, just a high concentration of it, Brain Octane actually is caprylic acid. Coconut oil, palm oil and butter also contain caprylic acid, just in much smaller amounts. Because of the high concentration of caprylic acid in this oil (100%) the body is able to metabolize it very quickly into fuel. It becomes instant energy to be used immediately by the body and brain.
Also, along with a massive energy boost, this oil provides some other awesome health benefits such as lowering hypertension, increasing digestive health and even balancing out yeast issues in the gut. Along with zero smell and taste, it is the perfect oil to add to recipes like this high fat smoothie recipe.
I’d like to send a shout out to an awesome company, Bulletproof. Click here to get their MCT oil or their Brain Octane oil. You can use either in the fatty shake recipe, but will get more bang for your buck with the Brain Octane oil. They also carry a few other fantastic products that would be great in recipes (like ghee) so take a peek!
