Who wants a young looking skin?

As women the importance we place on how our skin, glow, and overall appearance is often so important. We choose to cover up any default in our skin as a mean of self-acceptance and approval from others.

What if I told you that your skin, though it breaks out, pimple, dryness and the more severe condition is actually speaking to us? Sending us messages to look within to re balance our body and mind. Yes! What you see from the outside on your skin is actually signals your body is sending you that there is a much deeper issue to be resolved.

Clear Skin From Within

The key to having a beautiful skin is from within yourself. Your gut plays a major role but also your emotions. Dr. Trevor Cates will teach us what we need to do from our plate to our mind. Also, learn why the “beauty products” that are supposed to be good for our skin can actually do more harm.

The last episode, I talked about how the secret fear of success many live with but unfortunately do not know we have. It’s an episode that will speak to you about what is fear of success but also how to recognize and move forward. You must believe that you can believe in yourself! You can listen to the episode here.

Next episode 83 will be a story telling ” I just gave up…”. A story about how we react to words that are said to us may lead us to better self-awareness.

I came back from California and posted a quick video in my community to get some inspiration on what this podcast was going to be about. I wanted to know what you needed….

This is what came through from a member:

“I have a fear of succeeding in weight loss. Like people will treat me differently as I lose weight. They will expect even more perfection from me.”

First I have to say to you, putting that question forward, you have a high level of self-awareness, which is amazing and will bring you so close to the solution.

For most of us, when we embark the weight loss journey, we aren’t self aware because we have disconnected ourselves from our body. What I mean by disconnecting is that we no longer want to be in our body. We don’t feel the sensation in our body because we don’t like our body and reject it. And so we close off to listening to our body. We don’t care for our physical body. We’re not eating well, not moving, not managing our stress, etc… We disconnect.

It’s very hard to be self aware of our own SELVES when we are not in present with ourselves, mind and body.

Symptoms of “Fear of Success”

For most women, fear of success is not even something that they are aware of. It’s a subconscious thought or reaction. It’s not present in their realm of knowledge.

They make choices that will lead them to failure without even knowing that they are making these choices because they’re afraid of being successful. That’s true for most people. In fact, if you ask anyone around you in the process of making changes in their lives, if they are afraid of success, they will say NO, emphatically say NO, because being afraid of success goes against logic.

So what does fear of success in weight loss look like?

  • What if I change my habits and it doesn’t work? Or what if I don’t get the results that I want? What will my friends and family think of me?
  • I have been down this path before and I wasn’t able to do it all the way. Why would things be any different this time?
  • I lost weight before and wasn’t able to keep it off.
  • If I don’t have my weight to hide behind anymore, will I need to show up? I won’t have any excuse anymore. Just like our community members… they will expect even more from me.
  • I have been overweight all of my adult life…I don’t know how to be anyone else.
  • People won’t like me as much… they will feel I’m in competition with them.

Does this sound familiar?

Self Awareness: The First Step in Quitting the Fear of Success

The first step to overcome the fear of failure is being aware that we are in fact in a “fear of success mode”. Self-awareness 101. Be present with your thoughts.

When you make a choice that isn’t in alignment with your goals… stop for a moment. Then ask yourself: Why am I making this choice that isn’t in alignment with my goals? What is driving this choice? Take a moment to reflect and observe your thoughts. This is hard to do when you aren’t used to it. It’s difficult because reflecting on our choices will bring us to a space of self-responsibility and self-awareness, and that’s not comfortable at first.

Through your reflection and self-awareness, is it possible that you are fearing success? Are you showing any of the symptoms that I have outlined above? If you answer if maybe or yes … there you have it. Now you know. It’s only fear of success.

Fear of Success is OK!

Fear of success is OK. It’s normal. Success means jumping into the unknown — a new area, a new state of being, a new relationship, a new income… a new body image. Success means getting out of your comfort zone into a new zone…” the uncomfortable zone”. It’s normal to feel insecure about this process… especially if this is not something you are used to doing.

Fear is a primitive reaction from your subconscious mind when face with change. Your subconscious mind is simply trying to protect you. Your subconscious mind wants to keep you where it can best protect you, where it knows how everything works, and where it thinks you are safe.

When you’re aware of this primitive behavior, you can best manage fear, anxiety, and worry. Know that it is normal and that you can choose to move forward and up anyway.

Know that success will ONLY come to you if you move out of your comfort zone. You’ve got to move up to be successful, girl!

Going Beyond the Food Formula

Understand: Be aware of the choices that aren’t aligned with your goals. Ask yourself why you are making these choices.

Accept: That you fear success and that it is a normal reaction to moving out of your comfort zone, which is necessary for your to achieve a different state (aka goals)

Take responsibility: When you feel the fear and the anxiety, acknowledge these feelings and move forward and up knowing that this is not a true fear.

077 – How to Put Yourself First Without Guilt

How to put yourself first without guilt

The word Self Care is central to many of my teaching. You need to learn how to put yourself first without guilt because I strongly believe and know that if you don’t take care of yourself…no one will.

There will no be a magical angel that will come down from the sky to sprinkle you with fairy dust, making you more in control of your eating, leaner, or more fit.

You’re are going to have to do the work. The only way for you to do the work is for you to actually make time in your schedule to do it.

I’m sure I’m not teaching anything new here… you know it intellectually. However, when you try to do it, you might find yourself struggling with the feeling of guilt. Taking the time to go for a walk is not nearly as important as your son’s competitive sports or your boss’ need of the new report tomorrow. Or even your mom’s need to go shopping… maybe your sister needing to vent about her husband.

Because if you say yes to yourself, you say no to others, which means they may not like you as much or not think of you as highly. Worse, they may think you are selfish and being selfish is sooo bad. Right?

If You Don’t Fill Your Health Bank Account, Who Will?

Your health is your like your bank account. No one will come in and fill up your savings account with loads of money so your won’t have to worry about your financial future. Miracles do happen, but let’s be realistic. We can stand still and wait for miracles to happen or we take action to create the change. And for you to be able to do this, you must learn how to put yourself first without guilt.

If you don’t take care of yourself, who will? Like seriously, no one will. No one can step into your body for you, clear up your mind, de-stress or move your beautiful body for you. The only person capable of that is you.

See the investment of time in yourself as filling your bank account so your can give more to others. You can be a better version of yourself and give more profoundly and in a more meaningful way.

If you take time to cook the food that are best for your body, your mood will be better. Consequently, you will be more loving to your partner or kids. If you take the time to go for a mid-day walk at work, you will be more productive in the afternoon for your boss. If you say no to your girl friend’s request to go the movies you really have zero interest in seeing, you will be less resentful next time you see her and be able to go the mindfulness course you’ve needed to take for the last few months and will become a more present friend..

Get it? Invest in your bank account to be a better person for others.

How to Put Yourself First Without Guilt: Know Your Worth

By simply choosing to make other’s needs, time, and desires more important than yours, you are making a statement to others that they are more important than you. You are telling others that you’re not worth as much as they are. You are fueling the vicious cycle of expectation on yourself.

It’s not their fault… you have created that belief, that perception of yourself by not making yourself a priority. By never making choice for you and by not taking the time to care for yourself, you are telling them that you do not think your are worth it. So they will keep asking and expecting.

The key to stopping this vicious cycle is this: accepting that you are worth as much as the other people in your life. When you do this, you will start making different choices. It will be uncomfortable at first, but you will send the message. In time, the people around you will start seeing you differently and will treat you with more respect.

Why? Because you are respecting yourself! You are respecting yourself by knowing your worth and putting yourself first. By putting yourself first, you will make choices that show people around you how much you’re worth.

Why are We Feeling Guilty?

Guilt is a way we have of recognizing that we have not lived up to our own values and standards. The question for you is, are the values and standards you are feeling guilty about good for you?

Are the values and standards you are feeling guilty about promote the best version of yourself or OTHERS?

Know that as you change your own perception of yourself, as you start believing in yourself and knowing your worth, the guilt will no longer be present. You will know deep down inside that you are making the best choices for yourself and others. Because when you’re the best version of yourself, you can give more of yourself to others. Keeping that in mind is how to put yourself first without guilt!

I received a phenomenal question from one of our community members, and I knew so many of your would benefit from it. Here is the exact question I have received from Emily from our community: “What is your #1 strategy to break emotional eating ( or addiction) and is it even possible to do without outside (and regular) support/ help?”

Well, let me get this out of the way first: Is it possible to stop emotional eating without outside help/ support? Yes and yes, BUT you need to first be aware and accept the following concept that I’m about to explain to you. If you know this concept and accept it at your core, then yes it can be done without outside help.

So what is that concept? Well it’s going to sound very simplistic and for some unbelievable. So stay open and stay with me…

You Can’t BREAK Emotional Eating

If you’re looking for the #1 strategy to break emotional eating, then here’s some news: You can’t break emotional eating because there is NOTHING to break. I know this may sound completely crazy and unbelievable to many of you… but trust me it’s true.

Emotional eating is not a habit to be broken, not a disease to be treated, not a lack of discipline or weakness to be strengthened or a way that your body is letting your down. It is process in which your mind/ body is trying to communicate with you.

Emotional eating is a way in which your body is trying to tell you that something is out of balance. Trying to break a natural communication process between you and your body / mind/ spirit is a sure way to fail or even more cause more problems!

That you are asking “what is the #1 strategy to break emotional eating “ means that you know that the cause of your eating is rooted in your emotions, which is, in my world, an advanced thought. Most people aren’t aware that a part or all of their cravings is in fact caused by their emotions. So good for you to know that!

If You Can’t Break Emotional Eating, Then What?

If you can’t break emotional eating, then what can you do to stop emotional eating? Well, I want you to replace “break” with “understanding”.

Given that emotional eating is a communication process between you and your body/ mind/ spirit, the only way to prevent this is to keep this communication channel open. It’s about listening — listening to what your body /mind /spirit is trying to tell you and take action.

The moment you stop fighting with your emotional eating and start listening, a major breakthrough will happen. I promise that it works!

To listen to your cravings, you must get quiet and connect with yourself. I call this process “The Crave Cure Formula”. You can do this easily via a simple breathing exercise and time. To know more about the “Crave Cure Formula,” go right here.

My #1 Strategy for Emotional Eating

My #1 strategy for emotional eating is simple yet challenging — listening. Listening can be overwhelming, or for some, scary. You see, today’s world is not conducive to listening to ourselves. It’s actually the opposite. It seems that solutions to almost every ache and pain that people sell to us require something “outside” of ourselves.

That’s why my answer to “Is it possible to stop emotional eating without outside (and regular) support/ help?” I say a strong YES! Because the real solution comes from within, from listening in. No one else can do that for us but ourselves. We can be taught how to listen, which is what Crave Cure Program does. But the actual process of healing emotional eating can only be done by us, internally.

food restriction

Food restriction is a topic that I’ve never discussed in the Crave Cure series. I mainly help women who have issues with emotional eating. Also, I never had any experience with food restriction. However, whether we struggle with emotional eating or food restriction, the path to healing is the same. So in this episode, I’m touching on food restriction for the very first time. I’ve brought in a guest who is intimately familiar with this issue.

Meg Doll’s Story

Meg Doll is a registered nutritionist, author, and eating disorder survivor. Her struggle with food restriction began when she was 10 years old, when she lost a close family member. She began restricting food as a means to cope with the pain of losing someone dear to her. With the help of her parents, she quickly recovered. However, at the age of 15, she relapsed and the struggle dragged on for years. After recovering to anorexia, she also struggled with disordered eating.

Fortunately, she recovered from her eating disorder and disordered eating, studied to become a nutritionist, and is now spreading a message of hope to women who struggle with eating disorders.

Highlights of the Interview

Eating Disorder Versus Disordered Eating – Eating disorder is a mental illness. It is not a choice. On the other hand, disordered eating comes from having a disordered relationship with food. It’s using food to numb the emotions you don’t want to feel (aka emotional eating) or having an obsession with food.

On Thoughts that Trigger Restrictive Food Behavior – In order to overcome food restriction, you must bring awareness to the talk that’s going on inside your head and disassociate yourself from them. You must realize that these thoughts aren’t yours. They’re from the voices inside your head. However, you do have a choice on how to respond to these voices.

On Letting Go and Tuning In – Meg Doll shares that, after she overcame food restriction, she became obsessed with meal plans. However, she eventually learned to eat intuitively. She says that we must learn to let go of the things, such as rules, that are no longer serving us and to tune into ourselves. Too many rules leave no room for intuition.

The Road to Recovery – There is no straight road to recovery. There will be highs and lows. But as you progress, these highs and lows will be less dramatic.

On Loving Yourself – If you want to recover from an eating disorder, you must love yourself first. There are four building blocks of self-love: self talk, self-compassion, self-acceptance, and self-care. Megan discusses this in her upcoming book.

Last episode, I talked about how to start believing in yourself. It’s an episode that will speak to you especially if you struggle with self-doubt. You must believe that you can believe in yourself! You can listen to the episode here

Next episode will be exciting because I’m about to share my #1 strategy for overcoming emotional eating! So stay tuned!

How to start believing in yourself

How do you start believing in yourself that you can actually change your life and your relationship with food?

That’s one of the questions I got from a member of my online community “Going Beyond The Food.”

That’s word for word from Vicky. Does it sound familiar to you?

The reason why I decided to share this question with all of you is because I know that Vicky’s question is one that many of us have asked ourselves, but only a few will ever voice out loud.

I know I certainly didn’t voice this question and I struggled with it for years.

From the outside, anyone looking at me and my life would have never thought I didn’t believe in myself. I actually worked very hard so no one could figure it out…like worked so hard that my health collapsed.

So I want to applaud Vicky for asking this question and thankful that she gave me the inspiration for writing this blog and recording this podcast.

I’m grateful for all the women in my online community!

How to Start Believing in Yourself

If you want to learn how to start believing in yourself that you can improve your life, start a new routine or dive deep into your emotional eating. start with one thing… and one thing only.

The first step to ANY change…and I mean ANY, is : Awareness and Acceptance.

Awareness That You Had “Belief in Yourself”

You must be aware that you were born with the capacity to believe in yourself… you were given this magic skill at birth. Believing in yourself is what caused you to evolve and grow up to be a terrible two-year-old toddler, a three-year-old toddler thirsty for knowledge and asking questions…etc. It’s a God-given trait.

If you are asking the question : How do you start believing in yourself that you can actually change your life and relationship with food? It means that somewhere along the way, something happened, someone said something, or perhaps an event caused you to lose or lessen that innate “belief in yourself”.

Belief in ourselves is also fostered by our environment, parents, siblings, elders, and caregivers as we grow up …. It’s reinforced by their words, actions, and reactions to our behaviors, words and/or what some may call achievements.

You may or may not have received this “fuel” from your environment as you lived your life. You may or may not have been supported in growing and nurturing this belief in yourself.

You may have been encouraged to believe in yourself only if you were “good enough” or perfect enough.

Your belief in yourself may have been conditional on something …

There are too many possibilities for me to mention, but I hope you understand the idea that you were born with the ultimate belief in yourself. However, as you journeyed through life, something happened that may have caused you to lose that belief in yourself.

Accept That It is in You to Be Able to Believe in Yourself

The hardest part of learning how to start believing in yourself is actually accepting that you already have that innate belief in yourself.

That’s right…now you know it’s there inside of you. It was just buried under the criticisms and disappointments that have accumulated through the years. Deep down inside, you believe in yourself. Yet somehow, your subconscious mind (aka your ego) is running a loop tape in your mind that leads you to “not believe in yourself” or to doubt yourself.

If this is new to you, I encourage you to read this blog post and listen to Bruce Lipton’s interview  so you can understand the concept of the subconscious mind and ego.

Accepting that you have it in you to believe in yourself is difficult because it may cause you to get out of your own comfort zone.

Accepting that you believe in yourself and acknowledging the fact that some environmental factors may have buried your “self belief” may cause you to actually make the changes that you have been wanting to make.

Accepting that it is as simple as that… you have IT. You simply need to believe that you believe in yourself.

Next Steps to Fostering Your Belief in Yourself

The next step in learning how to start believing in yourself is taking responsibility of the new awareness that you have this innate belief in yourself.how-to-start-believing-in-yourself-3

Take responsibility to work on the “loop tape” running in the background of your mind that says, “I do not believe in myself.” For this topic, I would refer you to a very powerful interview I had with Sean Croxton and his free manual on how to change your mindset.

It’s is possible to change but work needs to be done… Now go out and do it! Do the work, get out of your comfort zone, face you fear, and grow!

overcoming sugar addiction

I’ve written and talked about overcoming sugar addiction a number of times before. But my guest in this podcast episode has new valuable insights to offer because she knows sugar addiction quite intimately. Karen Thomson was a sugar addict who had to check into rehab to overcome her addiction.

When she was about 4 years old, a family member died and she was traumatized. Since then, she started turning to food whenever she needed her emotional needs met. She started to use sugar and refined carbs as an external fix to the internal trauma that she was trying to deal with.

She struggled with anorexia, bulimia, and compulsive overeating. Hitting rock bottom at the age of 24, she checked into a rehab center where she stayed in treatment for 18 months. At that time, her weight was so low that she lost her menstrual cycle. She was severely malnourished.

Fast forward to today, Karen is a happy married woman with children. She now runs a recovery center and has written a book called “Sugar Free: 8 Weeks to Freedom from Sugar and Carb Addiction.” She’s now making a positive difference in the lives of sugar addicts. She says that while her life is different from what it was, she’s still a work in progress.

Overcoming Sugar Addiction: Interview Highlights

The difference between sugar craving and sugar addiction: Addiction is the compulsive use of a substance or behavior despite the negative consequences on our health, relationships, and our lives in general. Thus, a sugar craving becomes an addiction when you cannot stop eating sugar despite the negative impact it’s having on your health. (You can learn more about the difference between sugar cravings and sugar addiction in my interview with Dr. Sam Shay.)

How she overcame sugar addiction: She learned to acknowledge her feelings, identify them, and ask herself what she could do instead of using food to meet her emotional needs.

What her therapist taught her to deal with her feelings of not being good enough: Go to the bathroom, look in the mirror, and say this mantra, “My name is Karen. I’m a good person. I don’t need to please others. God, teach me to love myself.” She had to say the mantra five times, as many times a day as needed.

The hard part about overcoming sugar addiction: Stepping out of your comfort zone, taking steps to heal your old wounds, and choosing life. You need to know how good it feels when you’re free of the addiction, but you also have to acknowledge the damage that your addiction has caused. It’s normal to find it difficult because it’s a growth process. It takes time, practice, and consistency.

On finding solutions to problems: There is no external solution to an internal problem. We look for happiness elsewhere — the perfect relationship, the perfect job, more money, etc. We forget that everything we need is already inside us. It only takes a little bit of dedication and practice to access this wealth which lies within.

Karen’s Solution for Overcoming Sugar Addiction

Karen and I both agree that it’s very challenging to stay away from sugar because it’s everywhere. However, it’s just a matter of putting little things in place. Here are three things that helped her in overcoming sugar addiction:

  1. Plan and prep your meals the day before. That way, you wouldn’t be left hanging or hungry.
  2. Make time to meet your emotional needs. Meditating, keeping a gratitude journal, and setting your intention for the day are simple ways of finding inner peace and joy. When you feel stressed, be sure to do a breathing exercise. (I teach a breathing exercise in my free Crave Cure guide.)
  3. Find a community or a support group of like-minded individuals. These people can help you when you can’t help yourself. They also are a source of encouragement and inspiration.

how to detox the right way

I’m so happy to have had the chance to interview Megan Blacksmith, a certified holistic health coach who graduated from Institute for Integrative Nutrition in New York. She has made it her mission to help women work through their chronic medical conditions. She also teaches women how to detox the right way so they can move further along their journey to health and wellness.

Below is the summary of what we covered in our fruitful interview:

What is Detoxification?

If you want to know how to detox the right way, you must first understand what detoxification means. The most widespread myth about detoxification is that it’s just a quick fix — you either starve yourself, take a powder, or drink some lemon-cayenne mixture. After using these “detoxification” methods, you can eat whatever you ate before. Nothing can be farther from the truth.

Detoxification is the natural process by which the body removes the toxins that we took in through breath, food, water, and skin. Your body is naturally detoxing every single day. We should focus on supporting that natural process. We want to make it easier by getting rid of the toxins that are already in the body. However, we also need to prevent new toxins from coming in.

Our bodies are made to deal with toxins, but when there’s just too much toxins coming in from the environment, the body may not be able to keep up.

The 5 Main Organs of Detoxification

There are five main organs involved in detoxification:

  1. Skin – Whatever you put on your skin gets into your bloodstream. The skin gets rid of toxins through sweat, but sometimes, we prevent this natural process by using antiperspirants.
  2. Lungs – Toxins are breathed in and out of the body.
  3. Kidneys – The kidneys filter the blood. It requires proper hydration to keep it working effectively. We need to flush out the kidneys and keep things moving.
  4. Liver – Prior to the detoxification process, the liver needs the most preparation. If you were to force detoxification too hard and you’re releasing toxins that your body is not ready to deal with, that could be very dangerous.
  5. Colon – A healthy colon removes toxins from the body. If you’re not eliminating daily, you will reabsorb the toxins that your body is trying to get rid of.

3 Phases of Detoxification

Detoxification can be broken down into three phases:

  1. Reconverting fat-soluble toxins into water-soluble toxins so they can be escorted out of the body. Fat-soluble toxins can be your natural hormones or exogenous hormones (hormones you get from external sources such as food and cosmetics). Getting rid of excess hormones is important for women especially for those who have excess estrogen. Having a properly functioning detoxification system and liver are important to hormone balance. Endotoxins from bacteria and excess neurotransmitters are also fat-soluble toxins.
  2. Neutralizing toxic compounds.
  3. Excreting the toxins from the body.

When is Detoxification Dangerous?

Not knowing how to detox the right way can be dangerous. The most dangerous thing about detoxification is when your body is not prepared for it. What happens when you force phase one really hard and your body is not ready for phase two? The compounds are half-converted. This puts them in a potentially more dangerous state than they were as a toxin. This happens when people detox too quickly. They lose weight rapidly and the toxins from the fat are released into the body. However, the pathways are not open to allow the toxins to exit the body.

Is it Normal to Have Detox Symptoms?

If you have extreme detox symptoms, that’s not necessarily part of the process. In other words, we don’t need to feel horrible for the detoxification process to be working. Symptoms like headaches, rashes, and extreme fatigue may be signs that you are detoxing too fast that your body can’t keep up with getting rid of the toxins. You may need to slow the process down.

Practices That Support Detoxification

  1. Drinking an elixir every morning – An elixir is a large glass of water to which you can add all sorts of different things to support the body in different ways. Here are some liquids you can mix with water to make a detoxifying elixir:
    • Lemon juice – Wakes up the digestive system and supports the liver.
    • Cranberry concentrate – Flushes out the lymphatic system and can help with movement.
    • Liquid chlorophyll – Stimulates the glutathione activity, traps toxins, and is also an internal deodorizer.
  2. Dry brushing – Dry brushing is running a brush from the arms and other parts of the body. This practice stimulates the lymphatic system and can remove “old bacteria” from your body.
  3. Contrast shower – Contrast shower is rotating between hot and cold water 15 to 30 seconds. It stimulates lymphatic system. Ideally, you can get through six cycles of this, but even one cycle is enough.

Note: Juice cleanses are not really detoxifying because, when you do a juice cleanse, you don’t get a lot of amino acids which are important for detoxification.

Eat The Right Foods The Right Way

Knowing what foods help your body detoxify is part of learning how to detox the right way. Cruciferous vegetables support the detoxification process. They give your body the sulfur it needs so it can unlock phase two of the detoxification process. Garlic and onions are also rich in sulfur.

However, it’s best to listen to your body and see if the detox foods you eat are well-tolerated by your body. For instance, if you have bacterial overgrowth in your digestive system, sulfur-rich foods like onion and garlic might irritate your intestines.

If you can’t tolerate a real food item, that doesn’t mean you have to eliminate it from your diet. It could mean that something in your body needs to be fixed. Completely eliminating a food item with a lot of nutritional benefits from your diet is not the wisest option. You need to listen to your body, figure out why you can’t digest the food, and address the issue.

How to Detox the Right Way: Signs that Detoxification is Not Working or Working Too Fast

Watch out for these symptoms while you’re detoxing:

    • Skin conditions – rashes, acne, rosacea
    • Body odor
    • Thick coating on the tongue
    • Constant headaches
    • Brain fog

How to Detox the Right Way: Final Notes

Before you get into a detoxification program, you need to know which health conditions you need to address. There are two tests that can help you with this: (1) the Dutch Test, which is a urine-based hormone test; and (2) the Neurotransmitter Test. Be sure to have the results checked by a professional who knows how to read them.

Be willing to commit to make lifestyle changes if the  results requires you to do so. Otherwise, the detoxification process would be of little use to you.

Also, remember that emotional work is important in the detox and healing process.

Last episode was a coaching session, and it was all about perfectionism. The quest for perfection can rob you of joy and peace of mind. In this coaching session, I shared my insights as well as some tips on how to overcome perfectionism. I highly recommend that you listen to it!

Perfection is a Joy Killer

perfection 2

Perfection is a controversial subject. Before we go further, let’s define “perfection” so we can have a neutral ground.

“Perfection is the condition, state, or quality of being free or as free as possible from all flaws or defects.” – Wikipedia

Being free of flaws…”An attempt to be free of flaw” pretty much sums up my life from the age of 9 to 35 . When I was 35 years old, I ended up in hospital because I was trying so hard to be perfect, and my body wasn’t able to keep up. I know that sounds extreme, but it’s true. I didn’t know it at that time, or for that matter, didn’t want to hear it, but soon, I could no longer deny it.

If you are a student of one of my programs or read my bio … you know the story. I’ll spare you the details, so you’ll have to trust me. If not you read my bio now!

Chasing After Perfection is a Way of Life

The need to be “perfect” runs deeps in me. It’s how I approached life and, to this day, it’s still how I first approach anything. Take how I approach the way I take care of my skin as an example.

Until I was 37 ( I’m now 42), I took pleasure in taking care of my skin, doing my make up, and even my beauty regimen in general. I bought popular beauty product brands and had a morning and night routine…I did mask here and there. The girly stuff.

Then I was taught about the level of toxicity and danger in commercial beauty products. If you don’t know it yet, most commercial beauty products contains heavy metals, phthalates, tar, sulfates, and other chemicals that our bodies recognize as toxins. Thus, if we want to be healthier, we should avoid beauty products containing these chemicals.

So here’s how the perfectionist in me thinks: Stephanie, you know this information, so you have to ditch all these products and go 100% clean. Do your research and look for the safest and cleanest products you can ever hope to find, and let’s use that going forward. So I spent hours doing research and found that the only way to be 100% clean of any chemical was to use food grade organic beauty product.

Guess what I did. I found a company that manufactured 100% perfect beauty products, ordered the entire line, and threw out all the products that I was using…and I mean ALL. I figured that if I couldn’t buy 100% perfect beauty products, I must learn to make them. The most available product in my bathroom was coconut oil, which I used for my hair, body, face and even my teeth.

Does this sound familiar to you? Think about how this applies to other aspects of your life: obsession with exercise or food, the way you dress, how you are perceived at work, what people think about you, etc…

Where Does It Come From?

Eventually, I became aware of this tendency towards perfectionism and it took a lot of introspection. So you won’t have to spend weeks, months or years looking for answers, I will go straight to the point:

Our attempt to achieve “perfection” is really our way of compensating for what we perceive as our inadequacies.
In my case, my perfectionism is deeply rooted in my early engagement in sports. At very young age, I was into competitive sports and was taught that being number one was the only acceptable result. If I wasn’t able to win that gold medal or hold the #1 position, it was because I didn’t work hard enough… and guess what happened. When I didn’t reach #1 or broke records or get that gold medal, it only meant I wasn’t working hard enough.

The “not working hard enough” belief registered in my subconscious mind. I spent the following 25 years attempting to prove to the world that I was working hard enough… even in my beauty routine!

Crazy but true!

Excellence Versus Perfectionism

Today, I strive for excellence rather than perfection. I want to be the best that I can be, but the results or outcomes don’t define me as a person. I don’t strive to prove anything to the world; rather, I strive for happiness while in the pursuit of my goals.

Back to beauty routines…I want to have pleasure and fun with my beauty routine. I want to have a healthy skin, radiant glow, soft skin, etc… but not at the expense of my enjoyment of the process of caring for myself.

So I put back the jar of coconut oil back in the kitchen and found products that would keep me safe and healthy, and still provide me joy and pleasure. I was able to find an awesome brand of beauty products with a vision: progress over perfection. Talk about alignment of values!

I adopted the 80/20 rule for my entire life, personal and business. Less is more is my new motto. Is it easy? No, because in most cases, my first thought is: what is the best of best? How can I make this perfect? Then, my ability to be present and self-aware protects me from acting on the first thought and actually make a different decision.

Being present and self-aware is the “cure” for perfectionism.

It’s a journey…

Last episode was about intuitive eating. I had an interview with Devyn Sisson, the author of Kitchen Intuition. We talked about what intuitive eating is and how to bring it to your life. I strongly recommend that you check it out!
